The Sheboygan Community Theatre
Foundation, Inc.
On October 7, 1996, the Sheboygan Community Theatre Foundation,
a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation, was established
and became the single significant driving force in the preservation
and restoration of the Sheboygan Theater.
With a $100,000 gift from community philanthropist Walter
Brand, the Foundation was able to acquire the Sheboygan Theater
property in December, 1996 for $50,000 – well below
the assessed value. The remaining gifted funds defrayed the
cost of repairing the theater’s roof. The Foundation
spent the next two years developing a comprehensive plan to
restore and expand the historic theater.
Conversion of the Sheboygan Theater into a modern performing
arts center required the acquisition of six adjacent private
properties and the rights to a portion of adjacent public
property, which the City deeded over to the Foundation.
With the financial contributions of generous community supporters
and through ongoing fundraising initiatives, the theater restoration
to date includes the addition of an expanded stage, a new
ticket office, six new restrooms and the installation of new,
wider seats for a seating capacity of 1,150. Future construction
phases will include a rehearsal hall and a grand lobby reception
area.
