In just three short years, Moscow-based LEONID & FRIENDS have blown the minds of legions of fans with their uncanny ability to capture the spirit, musicality and fire of American supergroup Chicago. Leonid Vorobyev’s goal was a studio project in dedication to Chicago under the motto “musicians for musicians”. Vorobyev decided to indulge his love for the band by gathering the best musicians across Eastern Europe in a studio to record a video of them playing his favorite Chicago tune, “Brand New Love Affair”. No charts or scores of the song were available to Vorobyev so he transcribed it entirely by ear. Their first video quickly went viral, but they really gained traction when Chicago itself posted the video on its official website. To show the collaboration and respect between the two bands, Chicago keyboardist Robert Lamm has been a big supporter; hanging out with the band and attending their rehearsals while in LA, and original Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine has sat in on drums during a number of their shows.

And what is even more stunning is that Leonid & Friends hasn’t seen Chicago perform live, yet replicates the band’s complex arrangements amazingly note for note. "In the early 1970s in the USSR, electric guitars, amplifiers and drums were rare to find so at school we were playing self-made instruments," Vorobyev explains. Now his incredible 11-piece band has over 300,000 followers across social media and has had an astonishing 50 million+ video views… before ever touring outside of Russia!

The success of Leonid and Friends also shows how the Internet has opened up cultural pathways that didn’t exist between Russia and the United States when Chicago hit the scene. “Music is the universal language, and in itself it can unite people,” Vorobyev says. “We are extremely happy we can bring even a little contribution to creating a peaceful, friendship environment between the two countries.”
